Aldactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that acts perfectly as a water pill but at the same time stops the organism from absorbing excessive amounts of salt and keeps the level of potassium stable. Mostly it is used to treat conditions that include a considerably reduced aldosterone level. Aldosterone is one of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands and is responsible for regulating the salt and water balance within the body.

Another reason for an Aldactone prescription would be edema (fluid retention) in patients who have congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of liver or a nephrotic kidney disorder. Aldactone can also treat or help prevent hypokalemia.

Since Aldactone generally produces a fixation of potassium in your system on a certain level preventing it from going lower, products rich on potassium, such as salt substitutes and low-sodium milk, can increase your potassium levels while you are on this drug. Please free your daily menu of them for the time of the treatment regimen. You should also avoid alcohol, since it increases Aldactone's side effects. These effects include muscle pain or weakness, uneven heartbeat, drowsiness, shallow breathing, confusion spells, nausea, dizziness, skin rash.
